Minimum Screen Size for Remote Servers

When you access a virtual machine (VM) in the U.S. Cyber Range environment, you're not just opening a webpage — you're connecting to a full remote desktop. Inside that desktop, you can run a wide variety of software, just like you would on a local computer. Due to that, screen size plays a major role in how usable and accessible the environment is.

Importance of Screen Size

Some programs inside the VM expect a certain amount of screen space to display correctly. For example:

  • Google Chrome sometimes requires at least 670 pixels in screen height just to display the “Got it” button on its welcome screen.
    • When you combine this with your computer’s taskbar or dock and your browser’s address bar, you may run into issues if your screen height is less than 720 pixels.
  • While width is usually less of a problem, at least 600 pixels in width is recommended for most interfaces to display properly.

If your screen is below these dimensions, you may not be able to view or click certain buttons, menus, or tools — especially in full-screen apps or first-time setup prompts.

Type Resolution Purpose
Minimum 600 × 720 Required to access core interface elements
Recommended 1920 × 1080 Best for full usability and multitasking

We require a minimum resolution of 600 by 720, but we recommend using (1920×1080) for the best experience.

Tips to Improve Usability

  • Use full-screen mode when connecting to your VM.
  • Temporarily hide your taskbar or dock to gain extra vertical space.
  • If you're on a smaller laptop or device, try connecting to an external display.
  • Avoid using split-screen or windowed views when working inside the VM.

A Few Things to Know

The virtual machine environment runs a wide range of third-party software (like web browsers, code editors, and system tools). These programs are designed and maintained by their original developers, not by U.S. Cyber Range.

While we do our best to support your experience, we can’t modify the behavior or layout of these tools or always guarantee that they’ll work as expected on very small screens.

That’s why these screen size recommendations are so important: they help ensure you can access everything you need without getting stuck in parts of the interface that can’t be resized or bypassed.
