Exercise Environment Naming Conventions

Abstract

This article covers the naming conventions for our different types of exercise environments. For more information on exercise environments and their statuses, please refer to our Exercise Environments and their Statuses Explained article.

Stand-alone Environment Naming Conventions

Environments with a single virtual machine (VM) are named according to the following structure: {Environment}: {Operating system and user interface}(Deployment date).

Our Environment: Ubuntu 22.04 – Desktop (2023.6) follows this format as shown in the image below:

Multiple VM Environments

Environments with multiple virtual machines are named according to the following structure: {Environment}: {Associated content}(Deployment date).

Our Environment: Cyber Basics (2023.10) follows this format as shown in the image below:

Exercise-specific Environments

Exercise-specific environments are named according to this structure: {Environment or exercise}:{Associated lab exercise}.

Laboratory Exercise: Compromised Server Securing and Lockdown follows this format as shown in the image below:
